    FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions

What are the steps to form a nonprofit?

There are several steps needed to start a nonprofit. They include:

    1. Reserve/register intended name of the nonprofit corporation to make sure that no one else has created a nonprofit of the same name.
    2. In order for the IRS to recognize an organization's exemption, the organization must be organized as a trust, a corporation, or an association. It is possible for unincorporated associations to gain recognition as a tax-exempt organization, but not having a corporate form could expose all those volunteering for the organization to legal liability.
    3. File Articles of Incorporation (called a "certificate of incorporation" in some states.) Some states require supplemental information, including Proof of Corporate Name and/or Certificate of Disclosure.
    4. Complete IRS Form 1023 or Form 1023-EZ, depending on your tax-exempt status

How many board members does my nonprofit organization need?

There is no minimum amount of board members needed. You can add or update your board from time to time.

How many officers does my nonprofit need?

The IRS prefers that you select three individuals who are unrelated by blood or marriage.
